Upset with Terri Gross

I just wanted you to know how upset I've become with Terri Gross of "Fresh Air" in the last year. I'm definitely not a Republican but I am the mother of a gay daughter. The way Ms. Gross went after Lynne Cheney when she was interviewing her regarding her new book was nothing short of outrageous. It was the third and last time that I heard her behave in this manner, because I quit listening to her after that. I love WMUB, but that woman needs help.

Here's the reply WMUB received from Danny Miller, Executive Producer of Fresh Air:

"This interview posed a particular challenge: how to interview an
influential public figure about issues that extend into the world of public policy (gay marriage), which also relate to private family issues.

The fact that Lynne Cheney is the parent of a gay daughter, while also being the "Second Lady" in an administration which has opposed many gay rights initiatives, is an unavoidable part of the story. We would have fallen short had Terry not pursued it. While we respected Ms. Cheney's
desire for privacy specifically in regard to her daughter Mary (no
questions were asked about her), that did not mean that the entire topic of gay rights and gay marriage should have been off the table.

I continue to believe that Terry was appropriately challenging - but always respectful - in her questioning of Ms. Cheney.

All that said, I must confess that it saddens me when I hear that an
interview so alienated a listener that they feel compelled to never listen to Fresh Air again. I guess that's the "cost of doing business" in such politically polarized times. But I was glad to see that your listener
continues to value WMUB."

Best wishes to you and the station,

Danny Miller
Executive Producer/Fresh Air
